CCLinspire Feature on Kangai Mwiti MUA and founder of Bellesa Africa

Kangai Mwiti MUA and founder of Bellesa Africa
The wonderful Kangai has come to mean a lot to me in my first year of being back in Kenya, for some of my blessed highs have been with her giving me the platform to shine. So writing about her was nothing short of a pleasure and i consider this a somewhat small token of appreciation to share with the world what an amazing talent she is in the beauty industry.
Her story is one of a person who thrives at perfecting their art while also teaching others to do so. Kangai's tenacity is admirable, the way she works inspiring and her spirit, alluring, so it is no surprise that she has achieved so much, with even the most recent accolade from Africa Youtube Creator Awards for her youtube make-up and beauty channel.
Be sure to enjoy this read, while being inspired.

Where did you love for make-up come from?
It's honestly been there all the time. One of my friends from primary school mentioned that I used to apply lipstick on her when we were in Standard 3, and that continued for a while. I guess I realised that makeup wasn't going away eight years ago when I started being asked to show up for shoots, and the rest is history.

Some might not know, but not only do you do make-up, you also take your own photos and videos and also edit them. In a nutshell you are a production house, how have you managed showcasing your talents without feeling overwhelmed?
That's actually true! I really love the entire process, although sometimes it gets exhausting. What I love the most is releasing a final product and knowing that I actually can do it. It pushes my boundaries when it comes to creativity, and makes me believe that anything is possible.

You're quite a sensation in the YouTube Vlogsphere and according to www.socialblade.com you are the sixth most viewed Youtube Channel in Kenya. However what's important to note is the Youtube channels before you are also TV stations and one is a show associated with a TV station. So if we were to really break it down you are the number one Youtuber in Kenya that is not famous beforehand nor has any affiliation with any TV stations currently. Did you ever think this would be the case four years down the line?
Wow- that's really something isn't it? I always get surprised because the reason I began shooting and uploading videos was not to be the best, or to chase fame. I did it because I needed a creative outlet, and at the time the platforms that would have worked with me were already saturated. And to be honest I was also going through a sort of identity crisis at the time (that's another story), and so makeup was my release.

What makes you different to other Youtube make-up channels?
First- we produce everything that you see, here in Nairobi. And the funny thing is that many people have commented that they couldn't believe that content like that could be produced here. So in terms of standing out in the content creator world, that's one unique aspect about my channel. Second- I focus on featuring a myriad of skin tones and textures on my channel. Many other beauty channels have one primary "face" in front of the camera, and their audience identifies with that one particular individual. And third- we focus on women of colour only. There is a disappointing lack of content for women of colour on one platform or space, and I'm filling that void.

You have also recently started mentoring other upcoming make-up artists, what made you decide to do this?
It's easy- I want to leave a legacy. When we die, my land investments, businesses and stocks won't wake up and say- "wow! Kangai has been such an influence in my life. If it wasn't for her, I wouldn't be here today." People will say that about the work that I've done, and that means more to me than anything. What's funny is that many of my subscribers already tell me this, but I now want to scale that up to influencing, building up and mentoring my sisters and brothers all over Africa.

There is so many things that can be achieved in the make-up world, would having your own make-up line be one of them? or if at all possible can you share with us what direction you are planning on taking?
Sure- that's actually one dream of mine. That's all I can say right now :-)

Face Beat by Kangai for True Love Feb Issue
I feel very fortunate that i have gotten to know you and have learnt a lot from you. Now i had the pleasure of watching you share your story to other women in the creative world. What struck a chord with me was how at the beginning of your journey as a full time MUA, you took time to make a list of people you would end up working with to things you would end up achieving. Most i believe you have achieved and are still ticking off your list. What led you to do this? and is this a tradition you still carry on with?
Well, in the beginning it was all reaction. I absolutely hate it when anyone tells me that I can't achieve anything, and that sets my mind in that direction. So the funny thing is that I listed out all the people and organisations who didn't want to work with me at the time, and I set it in my mind that they would one day. And it happened. Unfortunately, many people in this world limit your dreams by using their own as a measuring stick, and that is one reason why I try my best to respect where you are and where you've come from. You never know whether you will need the people you step on to get to the top, on your way down.

Life comes with serious challenges and hurdles, kindly share with the CCL readers a motto/quote you live by that encourages you and keeps you motivated.
Achieve the highest at your earliest. That one's from my dad.

Lastly, what else are we to expect from Kangai Mwiti and/or Bellesa Africa?
Affordable and convenient Masterclasses each month, and of course more videos online. I'm also working on a really large project that I can't chat about, but it's really REALLY exciting- stay tuned!

It has been said that in life our aim should not be to be great but to leave a great legacy, this is i see as Kangai's story. A wonderful soul who is not only a light to many but also through her she helps others light up like she has with me. Let us learn from her and be people who go above and beyond the measure of average, who find ways to double and multiplay their talents and people who create opportunities for themselves and in turn for others too.
Kangai thank you so much for all the love and endless support you have shown me and you were truly the best person for me to write about as the last article for the end of the year.
You are a superstar and may you keep shining even more.

CCLinspire Feature on Miss Mandi aka 'The Throwdown Queen"

Mandi Sarro popularly known as Miss Mandi the 'Throwdown Queen'
In Africa being a young female with ambition can often be hard when it often feels like its a man world but despite being all three Miss Mandi who has drive for days has managed to cut through those hurdles and is slowly becoming a household name. She is the Throwdown Queen who entertains us on radio, inspires our cooking creatively on Youtube and is always surprising us with how her passion has led her to ever evolving experiences.Writing about her was not only a pleasure but inevitable...Be inspired and motivated!!!

You first came into the scene as the cool radio host who speaks her mind. Your most recent new title is the "Throwdown Queen" for through your love for cooking you teach us different ways on how we can change it up in the kitchen but beyond that, who is Miss Mandi? i mean the girl behind the scenes.

A creative introvert-ish who likes laughing loudly with thought provoking conversation, being introduced to new perspectives, reading, travel and hates forced friendships.

In a world that is constantly evolving, how do you ensure that you stay relevant?

Social media really helps one stay relevant especially since it's always evolving.

You moved back from Canada, six years ago now and a lot of amazing moments have happened to you. When you moved, did you have a plan set or at least a vision of things you wanted to achieve? if so, have some of your visions come to pass and would you care to share some?

It was 5 years ago. When I moved back, I just wanted to be on radio that was really it. It wasn't until I started working at my first station in Nairobi that I realized how social media would help me propel to the next level. One vision that I wanted was to get on radio, the rest has been a mix of being driven like going to plenty of auditions, luck, connections with people in the right places and knowing how to navigate in the opportunities I have "stumbled" upon.

Can you narrow down what moments have defined you and in what way have they defined you?

My first radio show - 'The Morning After'. When I was first hired by the station, I was supposed to host the mid morning show then one day I was called in and was told I would be hosting the breakfast show. Hosting this show got me some popularity and I ran with it. Hosting the breakfast show defined that I can be thrown into the deep end and swim with the sharks. Honestly that one moment has set the momentum.

Miss Mandi Throwdown has now become a phenomenon in the Nairobi scene at least, this year. T}o name but a few you have visited places like Dakar because of it, your recipes are now being printed in The Standard Newspaper every Sunday, would you ever consider having a cookbook or at least a book on food and travel?

Until I finally commit to jotting down a cook book, I look at my youtube channel as my visual cook book but I like your suggestion, I might do that.

What made you kick start your YouTube Channel earlier this year? and what else can we expect to see?

I really enjoy creating visual content because I am a visual learner so that was really the motivation, to visually teach others while learning. My audience should expect more vlogs with different angles and new segments on how they can view food.

For a young female succeeding at breaking through, what have been the challenges you have had that have also doubled up as your driving force to keep at it?

Being told "no" has been my BIGGEST challenge. Imagine going to auditions and being told no? Or pitching an idea and being told no? That no has motivated to create new avenues for myself to express my creative juices

What advice would you give to someone who is considering following in your footsteps?

Buckle up to put in the work. You will learn so much from failing so don't worry about failing. Network your butt off. Research about the field. Keep reinventing yourself. Collaborate with people. Focus on the work never the money. Creating dope things will lead to the money trickling in. Experiment often. Find your voice and constantly work on amplifying it as opposed to copying what others do.

In life it is not what you drive that is important but what drives you and Miss Mandi is the perfect example of what can happen if you let passion take the wheel, the experiences and opportunities will be endless. It is important to also nurture your talent because often that one thing might lead you to live the life you have always imagined.

"Your talent determines what you can do. Your motivation determines how much you are willing to do. Your attitude determines how well you do it. - Lou Holtz, American football player & coach

CCLinspire - Michael Owora founder of Team Tri Fit

Michael Owora - Team Tri Fit Coach & Founder

From the first day i met Michael his love for God was eminent and that love transcends to his daily operations with Team Tri Fit which in this day and age can be a rarity. We can be guilty of failing to seek God's daily direction in our day to day operations and thus also failing to realise the importance of doing so. Michael is a positive light in my life and true encourager in more ways than he may even know, his passion for fitness and the angle taken to achieve it, is somewhat admirable. Team Tri Fit is the first of its kind in Kenya giving both professionals and amateurs the chance to participate in triathlons and duathlons.
To share his journey and story, is a privilege and i am positive it will leave you beaming and motivated.
Enjoy and be inspired!
Where did your love for sport and fitness come from?
I think it’s safe to say it came from my dad, mum and through schooling. My parents really made sure we as kids were active physically (I think it was an excuse to have us fall asleep early lol) plus I always wanted to beat my dad at something be it football or squash so I trained hard. Throughout my childhood, I was generally an active chap who played squash for the school while dabbling in all other sports be it football, basketball, (I had a killer three pointer), cycling, baseball, swimming and marbles too. I was a busy body as they call it and never settled unless it was exam time. Coming into my twenties, I naturally became “lazy” until 2010 when I noticed “small potbelly” forming and I promptly hit the gym never looking back from then to date. I kept saying “I cannot have a potbelly before my dad or grand-dad yet I am still young”. This jump started my second phase of fitness which thrust me in triathlon the following year.

Fitness has become a big thing not only nationally but worldwide, how do you differ from other fitness coaches? What would you say is your niché?
Fitness is one of the biggest industries globally providing jobs not just for the athletes but managers, physiotherapists, specialist coaches, facility staff just to name a few. With such a wide scope of practise in the fitness world, I would like to say that my niche is triathlon training. Triathlon is a sport that requires an individual to swim, cycle and run completing each activity in quick succession within a set time or distance. The different distances to choose from are Sprint, Olympic, Half Ironman, Full Ironman and Ultra Ironman. The sport has been called “the new golf” and is one of the fastest growing disciplines globally and without a doubt this is evident in Kenya.

Triathlon training is an all-rounded activity that requires one to swim, cycle and run well without burning out or what we call hitting the proverbial wall. On top of this training, one is meant to incorporate strength and conditioning to build their muscle and ward off injury while also inculcating mental strength and endurance. This requires coaches such as myself to have a firm grasp of the fundamentals of each discipline while at the same time understanding who my clients are, what drives them and how to take them to the next level every meso-cycle.  Generally I would like to say, if you train with my team and I, FOR SURE you will become a lean, mean triathlon machine. You will learn how to swim, ride a bike and run like a marathoner and have a killer body to boot and who wouldn’t want that.

Your no regular fitness coach, for you have been motivated enough to start a triathlon event in Kenya. What was the driving force to making this idea a tangible reality?
I was following God’s prompting and also wanted to make tangible impact in Kenya. I believe that God (my source of strength and guidance) wants to use me to develop the sport of triathlon locally, get more people participating in it while raising the status of Kenya internationally as powerhouse in the discipline.

TTF (Team Tri Fit) has therefore conceptualized four key events dubbed the TTF National Triathlon and Duathlon Series that will see races being hosted in Nairobi, Kericho, Diani and Nyeri. This is a boost to the local triathlon calendar which now has nine races through the year and offers an opportunity to Tembea (travel) Kenya. These activities will create employment for athletes, coaches, suppliers thereby positively impacting the economy of Kenya. The president said he wants to create 500,000 jobs a year, why not help him in that agenda is my take.

Your story is different for you have come from a family of entrepreneurs but it must be said what you do is different from your core family business? how did being a part of that in the beginning help in the running of your own business?
It is true, I come from a family of entrepreneurs, my dad owns an advertising agency, my mum runs a PR agency, my sister an export horticulture company and my brother dabbles in various business opportunities. Having worked for and with my mum for eight years in PR I learnt a lot of business fundamentals that gave me the know-how to start Team Tri Fit. From basic administration, strategic management, finance and budgeting, HR, membership association management, media relations to managing office politics, I got a PHD, MA and a Degree all balled together.

The list is endless as to what I gained in those eight years especially how to manage life when finances are at their lowest or none existent. I remember starting off as an intern delivering banners and receipts for clients and rose to the operations manager before I ventured out. All the clients I handled during that tenure shaped the kind of team manager I am now and how the outfit is run.

At this point you have already done two triathlon events this year, one earlier this year in April and the most recent was last month (September) in Kericho, what have this two events taught you about yourself?
Again, the list is endless but the two most prominent things they have taught me:-
1.  To put God first in everything I do: Relying on His guidance through all my decisions has brought a sense of peace and security. It has taught me patience and brought a sense of satisfaction because I now know that it is not just for my glory but His and the greater Kenya.
2.   I still have a lot to learn: You know in life you can get comfortable which in my opinion is the end of your growth. So I keep myself open to learning new things everyday especially in my line of work. I am constantly reading, researching and looking for new ways of growing triathlon and training my clients.
3.   Every day presents itself with a new learning opportunity and I might as well grab it. What is the worst that can happen anyway???

What opportunities do you believe you have created for the greater public through Team Tri Fit?
So far the direct opportunity or impact Team Tri Fit has created is ensuring that people adopt a lifestyle of health and fitness rather than the “fad diets” and quick fixes. Just being able to watch people’s lives transform for the better physically, emotionally and above all spiritually is something amazing.

We have created two direct job opportunities within the team and at least twenty through the events we host. We also give back to the community by donating ten percent of our race proceeds to the gym facilities at the Spinal Injury Hospital.

Now that you have began, what more are we to expect form TTF?
Honestly God will be the best to answer that question, though i have asked him to give us the following:
  • The Diani Triathlon and Duathlon is the next race set for 3rd December, 2016 at Leisure Lodge Resort in South Coast. My prayers is that the event helps take triathlon to a new level in Kenya.
  • TTF High Performance Training Center to include a gym, pool, spin studio, physiotherapy studio and running track.
  • Hosting of Ironman in Kenya, as this is one of the biggest races in the triathlon calendar that attracts over 1000 participants. It would be amazing for Kenya to host such an event that will generate revenue, create jobs and impact the economy yearly.
  • Using TTF as another way to create positive Impact and ministering the word to those we train and interact with daily.
You have two more events left, one in December in Diani Beach, Mombasa and the Last in February in Nyeri. If people are interested in signing up what is it that you recommend and/or what is the procedure for training?

To get more information on the event, please have a look at the poster (see it below) and if you are ready to sign up for the event, please get in touch with TTF by sending an email to info@teamtrifit.co.ke and/or teamtrifitke@gmail.com

For training, I would recommend that an individual first select the distance they want to take part in be it Sprint of Olympic distance. Once done with that, they can start a BRIC training plan that involves doing a swim and cycle, swim and run or bike and run coupled with two days of strength training for one month. This will enable them complete the triathlon.

Alternatively, they can just join Team Tri Fit and let us take them to the next level of their fitness journey.

Lastly, kindly share with the CCL readers a motto/quote you live by that encourages you and keeps you motivated.
  • Philippians 4:13 - I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
  • Change is the only consistent thing in life, so get comfortable being uncomfortable.

I often believe i am nothing without God but i am everything and i have everything because of God.  Michael's story highlights this and reminds us the importance of treasuring God in all that we do and greater things shall happen. Also that life should not just be about what you can achieve but how you can help others along the way when doing so be it giving back to the community or making a conscious choice to positively impact those around you.

"Let all that you do be done in love" 1 Cor 16:18

CCLinspire feature on Jason Runo - Creator, Producer and Host of Kenya's improv Comedy Show "Because You Said So"

Jason Runo
Photo Cred: Thandiwe Muriu

I have been closely watching Jason Runo's journey ever since meeting him at one of the BYSS show and have enjoyed watching how the show keeps growing from strength to strength, and thoroughly impressed of his perseverance to carry on. His story of how he came to be the man of such a successful improv show is one that reminds us that if you allow change to take its course it will shape you into being the person you were always destined to be and lead you to bless the world with your blessed talent.
So without further ado here is the story of the main man behind BYSS expect to be inspired!

Jason you are definitely a Multi-faceted individual your talents are limitless and somewhat endless. Most people know you for BYSS, What was the inspiration behind it?

Thank You! You are too kind. Well, I had had the idea for many years. When I was a teenager, I really used to enjoy the improv comedy show “Whose Line Is it Anyway?” and also when growing up I was part of the Drama team at my local church. I remember on Sunday mornings we would get to church and someone would come and say “Can you guys do something for today?” and we would then perform a great skit. Now that I think about it, improv has always been a part of my life.

BYSS was a random idea that came about after I had just lost my job as a flight attendant, where I had been for eight years, so this gave me something to do. One day I called Mugambi Nthiga, another fellow actor who is also a key cast member of BYSS and asked him what his thoughts were on putting together a one-time improv show and who he thinks we should call. This is basically how it all began and the rest as they say is history.

Often people’s dreams are a non-starter either because failure of belief in one’s ability or when others are key to making your dream a reality they fail to be convinced, therefore stalling what you hope to achieve. With that being said, was there ever a time where you failed to believe in yourself and how did you deal with those challenges? Also how did you go about convincing the rest of the cast to join in when such an idea had never been tried in Kenya?

It is only human to have that self-doubt, most often than not I actually do doubt myself but I have come to learn and appreciate the value of “Just trying”. In life, you always regret the things that you didn’t do rather than what you actually did. If you try something and it fails, you can always have the peace of mind that you actually tried. We tend to think more about “what happens if I fail?” and I consistently remind myself of what could happen if it “Worked out?”

In regards to convincing the cast, they are the bravest people I know. Till today I don’t know how they accepted to come on stage with me for the very first show for all I said to them was “I have a crazy idea for an improv show, are you game?” They all said yes and next thing they saw a poster on Facebook with their names on it. THERE WAS NO TURNING BACK *Insert Evil Laugh*

I saw your interview on YouTube about BYSS. One of the things I noted you said was that there was a demand for a bigger stage. This has been addressed successfully for since you started in May 2014 each stage the BYSS show has taken place has been bigger than the last. Which is reflective of a person who is a goal setter and goal achiever. Kindly share tips with the CCL readers on your goal setting process as well as your train of thought towards making your goals a tangible reality.

Well, I would be lying if I said that I had it all planned out. When it comes to BYSS, I have had to learn on the go and the challenges we’ve faced have made us better. We out grew Braeburn Theatre real fast so we had to look for a new venue. I didn’t have a business plan and all that fancy stuff, so I have had to learn a lot on the go. I have to say that now things are different and I am definitely making bigger plans that I can’t tell you right now, but do stick around and see.

Another aspect about you that people may not know is your love for travelling, of which you have managed to incorporate it within BYSS. For some shows take place in various places within the country, like Samburu. How did this idea come about? And what are your intentions behind it, for in a way you are also encouraging tourism?

I could never emphasise enough how important it is to travel and I get shocked when I meet people who can actually afford to travel but they don’t. I love Kenya and I think it’s one of the most beautiful countries in the World, so I just want to share these experiences with our audience. When we did the first edition of “BYSS in The Wild” in Amboseli, I was shocked that some people had actually never been to a National Park. One life changing moment for me was when we spent an afternoon planting trees in the park and some people actually confessed that it was their first time to do that. I will say this travel is life and to travel is to live!

One of your greatest strengths is your tenacious spirit, which is truly inspiring. I say this because three years ago you did a road trip to and fro, from Nairobi to Cape Town and with help of others you were able to raise 15 million Kenya shillings for Nairobi Chapel’s Jubilee Scholarship fund. So far 50 students in need are now able to get through high school. What did that trip teach you about yourself and abilities?

That trip for me was a special time because it gave me a lot of time to think. I was going through what I would consider the most difficult time in my life. It was a period in my life when I discovered that rock bottom actually had a basement. But over and above that, it just gave me a deep appreciation for the continent of Africa and its people. I had been to most of the cities we visited but going down South by road was just a different experience, a Life changing one in fact.

Then Exactly four months after I got back from this epic trip, I got a free ticket to join my friend Florian Keller in South America (who drove all the way from Kenya to Brazil) so we spent a lot of time on the road again in Bolivia and Brazil. I guess the gods of travel love me.

You are also a keen periscoper, one of the few in Kenya who brings in viewers to see Kenya in a different way. What are your plans when it comes to Periscoping?

I don’t scope as much as I used to but when i do the general idea is to share special Kenyan experiences Like a Boda Boda ride or getting people to see me taking my moms cows to the Cattle dip with the rest of the world.

As we closely approach the end of 2016, do you feel that so far you’re on target with what your vision was for BYSS at the start of the year and even with your own personal goals?

This year has had its moments, both good and bad. As far as BYSS is concern, I am being challenged to move out of the comfort zone get more creative and to just grow the product.

As far as personal goals are concern, I haven’t travelled as much internationally but I have gotten the chance to travel a lot Locally especially in the first six months, I have actually visited five national Parks this year which is just as great.

What can we expect from Jason Runo, BYSS and your travelling expeditions in the year of 2017?

Personally, I would like to just feel more settled in life and maybe start adulting…hahaha! whatever that means. As far as travel is concerned, I would like to make a few travel documentaries and just go ham on my website with it too.

There will be people reading this who aspire to be in the creative industry either as producers, actors or the various other roles within the creative world. What advice would you give them while on the come up?

First, NOTHING WILL JUST COME TO YOU! You must go out and get involved. If you want to work in Film, go volunteer at a production house and just make yourself available. Be patient with yourself for in time everything just falls into place. Though most importantly just try hang out in places or with people who are already in the industry that you want to work in.

Lastly, kindly share with the CCL readers a motto/quote you live by that encourages you and keeps you motivated.

“If its not good, Its not the end……For in the end, Its all good!”

Life is a journey but the key is to enjoy the ride because the hardships you go through will always give birth to great-ships in a sense and Jason's journey is an example of how great one story can end up. we have not heard the end of him and i am certain his even barely scratched the surface but be encouraged that as his motivated quote says that truly if its not good its not the end for in the end good is what we get.

If you haven't watched BYSS then your in luck because the show will be on next week Saturday so go ahead and get your ticket. The show will leave you in stitches.
